The Three Sisters Apartments
Featuring 'Las Tres Hermanas' by Anahy Nuñez
The opening of The Three Sisters Apartments marks a milestone in the ongoing effort to provide high-quality, affordable housing to families in Las Cruces. Providing 70 new affordable units, this project offers a vital solution for low- to moderate-income families seeking safe and affordable housing. Built on repurposed land in a former Superfund area, The Three Sisters exemplifies environmental responsibility and community revitalization. The City of Las Cruces donated land for the entrance and driveway, transforming an overlooked area into a vibrant community space.
The development includes a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, along with amenities such as a community center, playground, on-site laundry, and resident support services, fostering stability and growth. Beyond providing shelter, The Three Sisters Apartments aim to build a sense of community.
A site-specific public art installation, “Las Tres Hermanas,” by local artist Anahy Nuñez, celebrates the region's culture and resilience. Inspired by the Mesilla Valley's agricultural heritage and the traditional “Three Sisters” crops—corn, beans, and squash—the artwork brought to life by Anahy and her team symbolizes unity and sustenance. Nuñez shares, "I wanted to visually portray the feeling of community through interconnection. The way the sisters lean on one another in the same fashion that the crops rely on each other in order to thrive and grow. I hope that sense of unity resonates with everyone who passes by 'Las Tres Hermanas' as much as it did with me while painting it."
