The Downtown Las Cruces Partnership
There is something quietly electric about walking through Downtown Las Cruces. Maybe it’s the blend of historic adobe buildings and vibrant murals, or the way a local artist might share a sidewalk with a startup founder over coffee. The energy feels organic—new and old, perfect and imperfect—entirely its own.
John Muñoz, President and CEO of the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership (DLCP), often calls the downtown district “our community’s living room.” These streets are shaped by artists, entrepreneurs, dreamers, and everyday residents who believe our best ideas are the ones we build together—and our best days are yet to come.
DLCP, an accredited Main Street organization and volunteer board, is laying the groundwork for something extraordinary for generations to come. Its mission is to promote and build a vibrant, culturally rich, and economically flourishing city center. "That vision requires planning, collaboration, and the dedication of many—from the City of Las Cruces to key community partners," says Executive Director Liana Angrisani.
Vice President Jeffrey Stewart highlights the growing collaboration between local businesses and micro-enterprises like food trucks. "Nearby shops source goods from our artisan bakery, and the city boasts one of the best farmers and crafts markets in the country. Signature festivals draw more than ten thousand attendees annually. Yet, with growth come challenges. Nonprofits, museums, merchants, and events thrive only when they’re community-driven and supported. Their leaders are our friends, family, and neighbors—people deeply invested in Las Cruces. DLCP helps facilitate these connections and conversations."
Support and donations from residents are vital. More people are recognizing the value of supporting local—how participation and contribution truly matter. Within a one-mile radius of downtown are over 5,000 of the city’s highest-paying jobs. This area—no matter where you live in the city—is central to Las Cruces’ smart growth. At the same time, it’s where more infrastructure work is needed and already underway.
DLCP’s work is guided by four transformational strategies: Design, Economic Vitality, Promotion, and Organization. With strong support from the City of Las Cruces, the organization nurtures the idea that local matters. Merchants offer everything from contemporary goods to handcrafted items rooted in tradition. It’s a reflection of what makes Las Cruces beautiful—its people, its stories, and its spirit of innovation and revival.
Downtown Las Cruces also hosts beloved events like the Zombie Walk and the Chile Drop on New Year’s Eve. The Chile Drop earned international recognition on CNN in 2023 and was nominated for USA Today’s Top 10 New Year’s Eve Drops. “We’ll continue bringing people downtown to celebrate these amazing events—and introduce new ones the community has been asking for,” says Muñoz. These gatherings boost foot traffic, support small businesses, and give residents a reason to connect, celebrate, and belong. They also spotlight our rich history, especially the unique stories of the Mesquite Historic District.
And DLCP is just getting started.
“The Downtown Las Cruces Partnership is the backstage crew,” says Angrisani. “The spotlight belongs to you—the resident with a wild idea, the small business dreaming bigger, the artist with something to say, the nonprofit helping a neighbor.”
Las Cruces is a special place. Its future isn’t written in blueprints or policies. “I have the privilege of working with incredible volunteers and partners who want better for this community,” says Muñoz. “I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
