Marathons, Triathlons, and More

run, walk, swim, or bike

Local races can be a great way to get involved in your new community while getting in shape. There are amazing races in the Granite State, most supporting a local charity. There are dozens of 5k races in the area, and all are beginner and walker-friendly.  And incredibly social events to boot(many with a free post-race beer!)  So no excuses; get out there and start moving. Here are some of my favorites.

Chocorua Mountain Race
Tamworth, June > 23K
Challenging trail race, across epic and rugged terrain. With 4800 feet of elevation gain, this will test your legs. Don't be fooled by the fast and flat start (The lead pack starts hot!), it changes quickly. An epic loop up and around the summit, this is the first race in the White Mountain Endurance Cup and some of the finest mountain running in New England.

White Mountains Triathlon
Franconia, June > sprint, Olympic, half iron
With several distances to choose from and Cannon Mountain as your backdrop, this might be the best tri in the state.

Swim With A Mission
Bristol, July > 1k, 5k, 10k
Swim in the lake named New England's cleanest while honoring our nation's veterans.  Active Navy SEAL demonstrations, military helicopters, and a great post-race event make this a race to cherish.  Bring the whole family for a day of honor and remembrance.

Bill Luti 5 Miler
Concord, July > 5M, Kids Run
One of the oldest footraces in New England, it features a classic loop course that passes through the scenic St. Paul's School Campus. Named after a Concord High School running coach, this race has been run for close to 60 years. Fun and fast course and crowd.

Ragged 75 Stage Race
Danbury, July-August > 75M, 50K
The full-distance race is a beast. 16,000 feet of elevation on very technical single track with steep ascents and descents. The Stage format ( 3 stages, 24-33 miles each day) is fairly new and unique to the local ultra scene. If you can't afford to spend 3 days running, the 50K is a great option on day 3. A fun test of endurance, and when the weather cooperates, nothing beats it.

Black Bear Trail Races
Waterville Valley, August > 50K, 23K, 4M, 1M
The 50K is the one to do if you're chasing a real sufferfest — 7,700 feet of gain around iconic 4,000-foot peaks makes this a proper mountain ultra. Not ready for that? The 23K is a classic in its own right, routing you through the oldest maintained trail network in the US. There's also a gorgeous 4-miler through White Mountain forests and streams if you want the experience without the suffering, and even a 1-mile fun run for the kids. Good medals, post-race snacks, and that unmistakable feeling of running big mountains. Something here for everyone.

Wallis Sands Triathlon
Rye, September > sprint
The stunning location and typically excellent weather make this a not to be missed race.  An ocean swim, followed by flat and fast road action with draw-dropping views, means you will be signing up again as soon as you finish.

Bear Brook Trail Marathon
Allenstown, September > 10k, 13.1m, 27m
Enjoy the trails of Bear Brook  with a range of terrain and difficulty. Well stocked aid stations and a fun group of racers make this one to get out for.  The full marathon makes for a good final prep race before running the Ghost Train.

NH Marathon
Bristol, October > 26.2M, 13.1M, 10K
A Boston qualifier, this is a small, approachable, family-friendly event. The marathon loops around Newfound Lake with dramatic views around every corner. Early October means great weather is a good possibility, and Autumn colors will abound.

Ghost Train Trail Race
Brookline, October > relay, 15m, 100m
The state's original 30-Hour Ultra. Super flat course along a 7.5-mile rail trail with great food and amazing volunteers who help you through the pain.  Leaders put up a disturbingly fast pace, yet still take the effort to tell my slow *** “good job” every time we pass.  The community of runners can't be beaten.  Weather has run from awesome fall temps to a blizzard in my past experiences.  #1 race to do in NH.

Yule Light Up the Night
Loudon, December > 2.1M
The perfect way to close out your race year. Lap New Hampshire Motor Speedway after dark, surrounded by a full holiday light display. Tights, gloves, and festive costumes are very much encouraged. It's low-key, joyful, and honestly one of the most unique race settings in the state. Bring the family, embrace the season, and finish the year with a smile on your face.

Bizz Buzz
New Hampshire has tons of mountain trail races.  The Delta Dental Mountain Challenge has races up various peaks in the summer. The White Mountain Challenge series varies in elevation, but always brings the dirt, while winter brings lots of opportunities to test your uphill mettle.
