Sarasota’s Live Music Scene: A Local’s Guide to the Soundtrack of Paradise

Kettle of Fish

Welcome to Sarasota County! If you love live music, you’ve moved to the right place. The opportunities to enjoy live music here are truly endless. From orchestras and jazz ensembles to full rock bands, acoustic duos, solo performers, and beachside jam sessions, Sarasota offers something for every music lover.

My name is Alyssa, and I moved to Sarasota from New England 15 years ago. Music has always been a huge part of my life, and moving here was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m the Membership and Event Director at Music Compound, a community music school located at 775 Bell Road in Sarasota.

At Music Compound, our motto is simple: Inspire, Collaborate, Educate. We offer music education for all ages and skill levels through private lessons, bands, camps, and group classes. Whether you’ve always dreamed of learning guitar, want to sharpen your vocal skills, or are looking for a creative outlet later in life, there’s truly a place for everyone here — including our incredible New Horizons Concert Band for adults over 50.

One of the things I love most about Music Compound is how connected we are to the Sarasota community. You can find our students and instructors performing all over town, supporting local businesses, nonprofits, and each other. We host events year-round including family celebrations, listening room concerts, open mics, and community festivals that bring people together through music.

One of our favorite community partners is The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime, located at 821 Apricot Ave. This colorful indie market is home to dozens of local artists, makers, collectors, vintage vendors, and creative entrepreneurs. The atmosphere is inspiring from the moment you walk in. Grab a bite from Hamlet’s Eatery in the outdoor courtyard, browse unique local goods, and enjoy live music throughout the weekend. Music Compound frequently hosts performances and events there, and if you stop in during the afternoon, you just might catch one of Sarasota’s talented local musicians performing live.

Sarasota is truly overflowing with incredible places to experience live music, and honestly, there are almost too many to list. Thankfully, there are great resources to help you discover what’s happening around town. Two of my personal favorites are:
  • The Ticket, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s free entertainment publicationreleasedevery Thursday.
If you’re looking to pair great food with live music, start exploring the Fruitville Road corridor. Stottlemyer’s Smokehouse remains a local favorite, serving live music seven days a week alongside some of Sarasota’s best BBQ and Southern comfort food. Sunday afternoons there are legendary among locals, hosting Kettle of Fish from 4-7pm, this is a Sunday Funday you don’t want to miss.

Just west of I-75, JR’s Old Packinghouse Café continues to be one of Sarasota’s classic live music destinations. From open mic nights to local bands and blues acts, the atmosphere feels authentic, welcoming, and uniquely Sarasota.

One newer venue making a huge impact on the local music scene is Encore Live, located at 8341 N Lockwood Ridge Road. Encore Live brings in nationally touring artists, incredible tribute bands from around the country, and some of Sarasota’s best local talent. The venue combines high-energy entertainment with great food, creative cocktails, and an electric atmosphere that keeps music fans coming back week after week.

Downtown Sarasota also offers endless opportunities for live entertainment. Mattison’s City Grille on Main Street pairs upscale dining with fantastic live bands throughout the week. Nearby, Cask & Ale has become one of downtown’s standout spots for craft cocktails and live music. Their Friday and Saturday night performances regularly feature some of Sarasota’s best local musicians, while their Sunday Jazz Brunch from 11–3 has quickly become a favorite weekend tradition.

If you’re a fan of seafood and live music, Walt’s Fish Market is another must-visit Sarasota institution. Serving the community since 1918, Walt’s combines fresh seafood favorites with live music on Saturday nights in a laid-back Florida atmosphere.

For music lovers who enjoy breweries and local entertainment, Big Top Brewing Company in Fruitville Commons offers a fun lineup of weekly events, including Dueling Pianos every Wednesday night and “Sunday Tunes with Timmy” every Sunday from 12–3 PM. Timmy, a young piano superstar who got his start at Music Compound, has quickly become a local favorite.

Looking for beach vibes? Sarasota delivers there too. Siesta Key Village is packed with live music throughout the day and night, with solo acts, duos, and full bands performing just steps away from America’s favorite beach. Every Sunday evening, the famous Siesta Key Drum Circle transforms the public beach into a giant community celebration filled with drumming, dancing, fire performers, and pure Sarasota energy.

Over on Lido Key, the Lido Beach Pavilion offers another perfect setting for live music by the water. There’s something magical about hearing live music with sand beneath your feet and a Gulf Coast sunset in the background.

Back downtown, O’Leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill remains one of the best waterfront spots to relax with live music, tropical drinks, and views of Sarasota Bay. Nearby, Marina Jack offers sunset dining accompanied by live entertainment, while their piano lounge inside adds an old-school touch to Sarasota nightlife.

One of the things that makes Sarasota so special is the variety. On any given night, you can hear jazz, blues, reggae, classic rock, Americana, funk, folk, Latin music, orchestral performances, or original singer-songwriters — often all within just a few miles of each other.
If you’re a live music fan, you truly moved to the right place. Sarasota’s music scene is vibrant, welcoming, creative, and constantly growing.

I look forward to meeting you on the dance floor.
