A Higher View of Lancaster

As we introduce Lancaster to new homeowners, we wanted to talk with someone who regularly sees this area from a different angle than most! Brendan Johnson is a pilot who started Red Rose Flight Tours to give people the chance to experience the joy of flying while seeing Lancaster County from an entirely new perspective.

From the air, what makes Lancaster County different from anywhere else you’ve flown?
I’ve flown over diverse terrain across the United States, but Lancaster County offers an incredible variety of scenery packed into one area. From the mile-wide Susquehanna River and rolling farmland to the hills and historic downtown Lancaster, there’s always something unique to take in from above.

What landmarks or views do passengers react to most during a tour flight?
The Susquehanna River is a favorite for both locals and visitors. Flying low along the river, surrounded by cliff-sides and forests, creates an awe inspiring moment that often leaves passengers speechless.

How does seeing Lancaster from above change people’s understanding of the area?
When most people think of Lancaster, they picture Amish farmland. While that’s certainly part of the landscape, seeing the county from the air gives you a deeper appreciation for its diversity; from the city skyline to the river and rolling countryside. You really see how Lancaster has grown while still preserving its iconic heritage.

What time of year, or even time of day, best captures the beauty of Lancaster County from the cockpit?
Each season offers a completely different perspective, which makes flying here special year-round. My personal favorites are spring and fall; spring brings vibrant farmland and blossoming trees, while fall transforms the county into a canvas of color from the air. Sunset flights are especially unforgettable no matter the season.

Many people moving to Lancaster are looking for quality of life. From your perspective, what makes this area such a desirable place to live?
Lancaster offers a unique balance of peaceful living and vibrant community life. You can enjoy quiet countryside while still having incredible local restaurants, shops, and events nearby. I live in Lancaster City myself, and I love the walkability and the strong sense of community among local business owners.

If you could design the perfect “first impression” flight for someone new to Lancaster, what would you want them to see and feel by the time they land?
Our signature “Full Dozen” 40-minute tour is the perfect introduction to Lancaster County because it showcases such a wide variety of scenery in one flight. By the time passengers land, I want them to feel connected to the area and inspired to explore the places they saw from above.
