Staying Active, Fit, Healthy, and Vibrant in the Hill Country

How The Center at Kronkosky Place keeps Boerne’s senior community thriving

A Place That Feels Like Home
When you walk into The Center at Kronkosky Place, you’re greeted not only by the sound of laughter but by a sense of belonging. For newcomers to the Hill Country, this local gem is much more than a senior center; it’s a hub of fitness, friendship, and purpose.

Zelda Sheldon, one of the Center’s longtime ambassadors, puts it simply:
“It’s home, the best country club you’ll ever attend.”

At 95 years young, Zelda still drives herself every morning to the fitness center she loves most. She laughs easily, calls bingo when others can’t make it, and checks in on members like family.

“We have a wonderful fitness community. If someone doesn’t show up, we call to find out why. We check on each other, that’s how friendships are made.”

From Meals on Wheels to Movement
Zelda first discovered the Center by volunteering with Meals on Wheels, delivering hot meals and smiles to homebound neighbors.
“It’s a lifesaver, for both those delivering and those receiving,” she said.
That early volunteer experience opened the door to her own membership in 2007. “I thought I was too young for an ‘old folks place,’” she laughs, “but I fell in love with the people here.”
Even after facing cancer, Zelda credits laughter and movement for her health.
“Keep moving. I walk two miles a day and do an hour in the fitness center. You don’t stop, you just adjust.”

A Central Hub for Connection
For new residents, The Center is a welcoming starting point for active aging and community connection. CEO Olivia Burdick describes it as:
“A central hub for anyone looking to get involved, whether you want to take a class, volunteer, or just find your people.”
The Center serves Boerne and greater Kendall County, offering fitness programs through partnerships like SilverSneakers and the YMCA, educational workshops, and social groups, all designed to help older adults stay engaged.
Each day, the Center buzzes with activity: morning classes, a lively lunch hour, and 14 Meals on Wheels routes reaching nearly 215 residents daily, all delivered by volunteers.

More Than Fitness
The Center also operates a Medical Loan Closet, providing free access to walkers, wheelchairs, and canes for anyone in the community, not just members. For those new to the area, it’s a great local resource after surgery or when family comes to visit.
And don’t miss the Thrift Shop, fully run by volunteers, many of them members themselves. The shop raises over $95,000 each year, funding essential programs while giving newcomers a meaningful place to donate and shop locally.
“It’s magical,” Olivia says. “Our volunteers turn gently used donations into direct community impact.”

Aging Vibrantly in the Hill Country
When asked what she wishes more newcomers knew, Olivia shared:
“We’re here to support you wherever you are in your aging journey, whether you’re highly active or need a little help at home.”
Zelda echoed the same sentiment:
“Come down and give us a try. We’re great. You’ll laugh, you’ll meet people, and you’ll feel at home.”
