License to drive!

When moving to the state of North Carolina, you are expected to get a North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence, as well as title and register your vehicles. You will need to visit an NCDMV office, and it's recommended to get an online appointment at  ncdot.gov/dmv for your license. It's recommended that you consider getting an NC Real ID, which will be needed to board commercial flights in the next few years. Once you have your appointment, make sure you have your documents, namely your out-of-state license, Social Security card, and two documents in your name verifying your NC physical address, such as utility bills, lease, mortgage statement or pre-printed financial statement.

After obtaining a North Carolina driver's license, new residents must also register their vehicle when they accept gainful employment or at the expiration of the time granted by the reciprocity agreement between North Carolina and their prior state of residence (usually 30 days), whichever occurs first. You will need the vehicle title (or registration card), title application, odometer disclosure, NC driver's license and the NC vehicle insurance information. New residents can initially register their vehicles without an inspection; one will be required to renew.

All vehicles with a valid North Carolina registration are required to have continuous liability insurance provided by a company licensed to do business in North Carolina. Out-of-state policies are not accepted. To avoid fines and fees, an individual should not cancel their insurance until they have surrendered their license plate to the NC Division of Motor Vehicles. North Carolina law also requires insurance coverage for uninsured/underinsured motorists, as well as minimum bodily injury and property damage limits. It is recommended to consult with a reputable insurance agent that knows the requirements of the State of North Carolina.
