Jon and Sarah Bucklew began work on The Joinery in the fall of 2018. In 2011, they’d created Seventeen20, a company specializing in handcrafted, industrial modern furniture, while they renovated their home in south Lakeland. Once the house renovations were complete, they decided to sell and use the proceeds to launch a new venture: a food hall! Why a food hall? In each of their previous careers, they spent an inordinate amount of time traveling—Jon as a touring musician (most notably as the drummer for indie-rock band Copeland) and Sarah as a software consultant—and each caught the foodie bug “something fierce,” as they like to say. They love food and they love design, and a food hall marries the two! They also love Lakeland and wanted to join the efforts of other forward-thinking, craft-focused creatives in the area to bring a concept they’d really enjoyed in their travels around the world, to their own hometown.
Why “The Joinery?” In furniture-making, joinery describes how pieces of wood are combined to create something beautiful and strong. They think this name is a really cool nod to their background as furniture-makers, but it also speaks to what they hope the space embodies: a joining of talent, skill, experience, and personality, to create something beautiful and strong for this community.
Inhabiting the former Lakeland Brewing Company building on the banks of Lake Mirror in the heart of downtown Lakeland, The Joinery opened in January 2020, housing seven different food vendors, a full bar, and a flower and gift boutique, all under one roof!
With seating inside and out, The Joinery is the perfect place to bring a group of family and friends—from smash burgers and fried chicken sandwiches that rival your favorite fast-food chain’s (Super Duper Spot), to steaming bowls of ramen and inventive Japanese street snacks (Sābu); from James Beard-nominated chef-driven tacos, quesadillas, and sides (Gallito), to Mediterranean-inspired, healthy whole foods bowls and handhelds (Plenty); from piping hot Neapolitan-style pizzas (Ava), to bright, fresh poké bowls and sushi burritos (Āto); and of course the cherry on top: St. Augustine, Florida-churned, creamy, handcrafted ice cream and house-made waffle cones and galette cookies (Mayday)—there’s surely something for everyone!
Although plans to bring the brewery to full operation were put on hold due to the pandemic, the bar puts a sunshine state spin on things with a focus on Florida-only craft brews across its 24-taps (minus two easy-drinkers!), hip and modern takes on classic cocktails using fresh-squeezed juices and house-made syrups, plus a natural, biodynamic/organic wine program (both by the glass and by the bottle). Golden Hour specials offered Monday-Friday from 3-6.
Bloom Shakalaka brings both the fresh and the funky to The Joinery with its curated selection of gifts and cards, a build-your-own-bouquet bloom bar, as well as full-service florals for weddings/events. Taking up residence in a little house right at The Joinery’s main entrance, it’s perfect for grabbing that last-minute gift on your way in/out, or snagging a group photo to capture the memory of your visit to “The J” at their super fun and frequently changing photo wall!
The Joinery hosts heaps of hip events each month, from weekly fun including Tuesday night BINGO and outdoor game night (Spikeball! KanJam! Corn Hole!) “Let It Throw” Thursdays, to special event pop-ups like Buena Market, a local artisan shopping experience, My Crazy Plant Life, a rare and exotic houseplant shop, or Aperol We’ve Been Through, an Aperol cocktail extravaganza, to list a few. Or, reserve areas of The Joinery for your own private event! From small intimate gatherings of fewer than 10 to groups as large as 100, The Joinery offers unique and exquisitely designed modern spaces to host your next kickball team dinner, boss lunch, or private party!
With sunset views over Lake Mirror and the downtown skyline, modern minimalist design throughout, seven specialty food vendors, a craft-focused bar, funky, fresh blooms and gifts, and a calendar chock full of fun times for all, The Joinery is Lakeland’s hippest hub!”
